Ep. 61 Identity Before Performance

Ep. 61 Identity Before Performance

Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed a quiet lie: I am valuable if I perform well. It rarely announces itself. It shows up in how we read our metrics, how we feel after applause, and how we feel when it goes quiet. Most leaders only notice it when burnout or a breakdown forces the question.

In this episode we look at what that lie costs. Leaders lose their joy, teams lose their creativity and psychological safety, and identity shrinks down to results. Then we go back to Matthew 3:17. Before Jesus preached a sermon, healed anyone or called a disciple, the Father said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Identity was declared before performance. Love was given, not earned.

That reorders how we lead and how we mentor. Performance flows from identity, not the other way around. We close with four anchors for staying rooted: begin the day being before doing, measure obedience rather than outcomes, lead with transparency, and celebrate being loved together.

You can lead for approval, or you can lead from it.
